House
(part 1)

Gregory House, M.D., is a story bound character and central character of the Fox medical drama House. Portrayed by Hugh Laurie, the character is a eccentric medical genius who heads a panel of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. House's character has been described as a "misanthrope", a "skeptic" and a "wet blanket", the last of which was named one of the top television words of 2006 in honor of the character.
On the series, the character's nonconformist diagnostic approaches, deep-seated therapeutic motives, and robust rationality have resulted in much disagreement between himself and his colleagues. House is also time and again portrayed as deficient empathy and sympathy for his patients, a practice that allots him the time to decipher pathological enigmas. The character is to a degree inspired by Sherlock Holmes.
